A practice born in Hollywood, the application of porcelain veneers has been the secret behind many movie star smiles. This durable, transformative cosmetic enhancement helps countless patients gain greater confidence in their appearance.

Perfecting Your Smile with Veneers

Porcelain veneers are used to reshape, realign, restore and whiten problematic teeth. At Kedzie Dental Clinic in Chicago, we often recommend veneers as a potential alternative to crowns when treating chipped or damaged teeth. Veneers also offer a solution when teeth are too long or too short. They can accomplish a more thorough and striking perfection of your smile than can be achieved using crowns alone. Furthermore, post-placement hygiene is very straightforward. Patients may continue to floss and brush normally following the placement of their laminates (veneers) making porcelain veneers one of the best treatments for encouraging the ongoing health of gum-tissue.

Porcelain veneers last on average between seven to twenty years. As is true with any porcelain material, dental veneers are strong, but can prove brittle under heavy impact. Common sense care for your veneers is all that’s required. Avoid biting down hard on hard substances such as ice or candy. And moderate your between-meal sugar consumption to avoid decay. In the event that a veneer does chip or otherwise becomes damaged, it can often be re-bonded or replaced.

The Veneer Timeline

At Kedzie Dental Clinic in Chicago, most patients can have their veneers placed over the course of two visits. The procedure can be done with minimal or no anesthetic. First, the surface area of the teeth is buffed and smoothed out to provide an adequate surface for the bonding agent and the veneer. A mold is taken of the teeth and shade of white is selected. On the second visit, the teeth are prepped with special cleansing liquids. The bonding agent is applied, followed by the veneers, and a special light is directed at the tooth to substantiate the bond.

Once the veneers are placed, you should have no higher risk of decay than you do with natural teeth. If you’re concerned about your bottom teeth not matching the top teeth post veneer placement, talk to your dentist. Many patients elect to have veneers placed on the upper teeth and concurrently choose to whiten the lower teeth to ensure a well-matched smile design.
